Thermal Mud For Sunburn
The pigmentation on this horses’ nose is pink resulting in very soft skin, prone to burning easily and incredibly badly. He wears a specially made mask with a nose piece, made from layers of UV material to ensure his nose is protected from the harsh Cape sun.
However, a few weeks ago, due to extreme wind (averaging 90 – 107km p/h), the mask came off and horsey’s nose burnt very badly. It was incredibly sore – so sore that he would not allow us near the right side of his face. Even trying to pick up his teff was done very softly and we could see he was trying ever so hard to use more of the left side of his lips than the right. I wasn’t sure what to try put on to soothe the sunburn as this horse is ultra-sensitive and reactive. After day 3 of still not being able to touch his nose, I decided to try 2 products – a rooibos rescue cream and thermal mud. I literally put a spot on of each, the size of a 50c coin as I wasn’t aware if either would cause a reaction. The next night, there was a clear improvement on the small area where the thermal mud was applied and where the rooibos rescue cream was applied, was red with small sores.
So I went ahead and applied thermal mud over a bigger area of his nose, whacking it on thick over the scabs that formed from the sunburn. The following evening we had even more improvement and he was no longer scared of us touching his nose. So again I whacked on the thermal mud, thick and now brave enough, I smeared it over the whole white/pink scabbed area of the nose. It literally healed his sore scabbed nose over- night!
Everyone who knows this horse, knows how reactive he is to meds, creams etc and how scared I am to try ANYTHING! But this is a winner for me now and I will make sure I always have thermal mud in stock
